Representatives of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan will hold the next round of talks on the issue of disputed areas on the common border in March, the press service of the cabinet of ministers of Kyrgyzstan told TASS on Tuesday.
"The government delegation of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan from March 10 to 16, 2023 will hold a meeting in Dushanbe with colleagues from Tajikistan, where they will discuss the delimitation and demarcation of the common section of the state border," said a representative of the cabinet of ministers. According to her, 15 people headed by the special representative of the cabinet on border issues Nazirbek Borubaev are included in the working group of Kyrgyzstan at the upcoming meeting in Tajikistan.
The state border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is about 980 kilometers long. Negotiations on its delimitation have been ongoing since December 2002. Since 2017, Dushanbe and Bishkek have significantly intensified this process. Currently, more than two-thirds of the boundary line has been defined and mutually recognized by the states, while the remaining sections are considered disputed.
Failure to resolve this issue has repeatedly caused conflicts involving local residents and soldiers of the two republics, including with the use of firearms. The last occurred in the early fall of 2022, with over 60 people killed on the Kyrgyz side during the clashes. Kyrgyzstan shares borders with Kazakhstan, China, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. So far, only the Tajik side has not been able to complete the demarcation and delimitation procedures.
