The mission of Russian peacekeepers in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone will be effective only when Armenia, like Azerbaijan, demonstrates its willingness to fulfill its part of the obligations. This was stated on Tuesday by Konstantin Kosachev, the head of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs.
"There is an agreement of Azerbaijan to stop at this and use the good services of Russian peacekeepers, there is an agreement of Armenia, at least the first persons of Armenia. As of today, we still have to make sure that this consent is accompanied by at least relative public consent, public consensus. Armenia must demonstrate that it is ready to fulfill its part of the obligation under this trilateral agreement, as Azerbaijan, only then Russian peacekeepers will be effective," Kosachev said on Russia-24 TV.
The peacekeeping operation in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone is Russian, only elements of coordination with Turkey are possible, the head of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs said. "In the statement of Mr. [President Ilham] Aliyev we saw certain messages to Turkey that this will be a joint operation. Let's read carefully both the trilateral statement and the text made by the President of the Russian Federation, it is the Russian peacekeeping contingent that we are talking about," Kosachev said.
"Yes, probably, some elements of coordination of the parties' actions are possible. The very fact of Turkey's presence in Azerbaijan and around Nagorno Karabakh cannot be ignored. But I will repeat: the operation is Russian, the operation is peacekeeping, the operation is conducted with the consent of Armenia and Azerbaijan," the senator added.
