Bashar al-Assad's victory in Syria's presidential election shows that the people support the continuation of the political process in the country, Konstantin Kosachev, deputy speaker of the Federation Council, told RIA Novosti on Friday.
"It may not suit someone, first of all, outside Syria. But for Syrians, it represents a change for the better, a restoration of statehood and an end to fighting in much of the country," the senator said.
"As a result of the elections, the voters are mandated to continue the political process, and Russia is ready, of course, to support the Syrians in this important endeavor. But only they can choose their own way," Kosachev noted.
According to the politician, the reaction of the West was, of course, predictable - even before the elections, countries had declared the illegitimacy of the elections themselves. "EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said after the meeting with 27 foreign ministers of the EU countries on May 27 that the elections were "neither free nor fair". But everyone has got so used to the same EU statements about the non-recognition of the results of any elections where a non-Western candidate won, that the same evaluations have led only to a serious devaluation of their real influence on the processes in the world," he added.
Kosachev noted that the Syrian "caravan" is moving on, towards peace and normal life. "The dissatisfied remain where they were - away from the real needs of the Syrian people," the politician concluded.
