Russia's position on the situation in Mali, where an insurgency took place at a military base near the capital, is not to interfere and monitor developments, the head of the Federation Council's International Affairs Committee, Konstantin Kosachev, said on Wednesday.
"Any coups, in my opinion, are fraught with unpredictable consequences, since the Constitution is violated. Yes, some of them end in a real change of power, but the outcome is always determined by the people, either supporting their initiators, or denying them such support. Therefore, Russia's position is not to interfere, to observe the development of events and to protect Russian interests, primarily the life and security of our citizens," the Senator explained, commenting on the situation in Mali.
Earlier, the Russian President's Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said that Russia was closely monitoring the situation in Mali and expected that it would not affect the traditionally friendly relations between Moscow and Bamako.
