The deployment of military facilities of NATO countries near Russia's borders is a reason for special attention and a reason to take measures for its security, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, commenting on Ankara's statement on the possibility of establishing a Turkish military base in Azerbaijan.

Earlier, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said the possibility of establishing a Turkish military base in Azerbaijan as part of the Shusha Agreement signed by the two countries.

"The deployment of military infrastructure of alliance member countries near our borders is a reason for our special attention, as well as a reason for our steps necessary to ensure our security and our interests," Peskov told reporters.

According to him, this is a matter of close attention of Russia. "We are cooperating with the Republic of Turkey in stabilizing the situation in Transcaucasia. We are in close contact with Ankara, Baku and Yerevan, and we believe that any steps should contribute to further stabilization of the situation in Transcaucasia, development of infrastructure, logistics, correction of the situation in general, and should not contain any elements that may become a reason for increased tension," Peskov added.

The text of the Shusha Declaration, signed by the presidents of Azerbaijan and Turkey on Tuesday, notes in particular that the two countries will act jointly in case of a threat or aggression by a third state. The declaration also noted that "the sides will continue joint efforts to modernize the armed forces of the two brotherly countries in accordance with modern requirements".
