Kremlin called for restraint on both sides of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict

12 May 2021

Moscow is concerned about the growing number of civilian casualties in the Arab-Israeli confrontation and calls for restraint on both sides, Russian Presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday.

"We call on both sides for restraint. We are concerned about the growing number of civilian casualties and the indiscriminate shelling of civilians," the Kremlin spokesman said.

According to Peskov, the parties to the conflict should try to reach a solution to the situation, relying on relevant UN Security Council resolutions on the issue.

"Both sides should find the strength to come out to resolve the problem, relying primarily on the current UN Security Council resolutions," he said.

The Israeli army and Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip have been exchanging rocket attacks since Monday. So far, more than a thousand rockets have been fired at Israel from Gaza. Most have been intercepted by Iron Dome air defense systems, but some rockets have fallen on the streets of Israeli cities. Several Israelis were killed and dozens were wounded. The Palestinian side in turn claims at least 43 killed, including 13 children, and 296 wounded as a result of the Israeli army airstrikes.
