Against the background of the withdrawal of Western troops, Russia is concerned about the development of the situation in Afghanistan and the emergence of a new hotbed of tension on the Afghan-Tajik border, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Wednesday.

" In general, of course, the development of the situation in Afghanistan as the US and other militaries withdraw from that country is a cause for our close attention and concern <...> Tajikistan is a very close, partner state to us. Indeed, the emergence of a new hotbed of tension and threat is something that worries us," the Kremlin spokesman said.

On June 22, the State Committee for National Security (SCNS) of Tajikistan reported that as a result of an armed attack of the Taliban (the Taliban organization banned in Russia and Tajikistan) on the Sherkhon Bandar border post in the Kunduz province of Afghanistan, 134 servicemen of the Afghan government troops retreated through the border checkpoints into the territory of Tajikistan. Among them were four wounded and one soldier was killed. The SCNS described the situation on the Tajik-Afghan border as tense.
