Kremlin named Assad's main achievement as president of Syria

The Kremlin considers the main achievement of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's rule to be that Syria, with much help from Russia, "managed to avoid disaster," Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.


"Probably the most valuable achievement of the last years, of the last 4-5 years in Syria is that ... was avoided with a lot of help from our country, it was possible to avoid a catastrophe and it was possible to avoid surrendering the entire country entirely into the hands of Islamists and terrorists," Peskov told reporters.


Another presidential election in Syria was held on Wednesday. Twelve thousand polling stations were opened for voters in all provinces of the country, as well as 46 polling stations in SAR diplomatic missions abroad, including the embassy in Moscow and the consulate general in St. Petersburg. All in all 14.2 million Syrians took part in the elections, the voter turnout being 78.64%. According to the results of the elections the active head of state Bashar al-Assad won a confident victory, he was supported by 95.1% of the voters who participated in the voting.
