Kremlin responded to Western criticism of amendments to the Constitution

The Kremlin is not ready to take into account Western statements of concern about amendments to the Constitution. Russia is committed to its sovereignty, Dmitry Peskov, the Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation, told reporters.

"Yes, we are familiar with them, but we are not ready to take them into account. Russia has certainly maintained, and continues to maintain, and will continue to maintain its commitment to the foundations and norms of international law, the spirit and letter of international law. But at the same time, Russia has remained and will remain primarily committed to its own sovereignty," Peskov said when asked whether the Kremlin was familiar with the fears of foreign partners that Vladimir Putin after the adoption of the amendments would be able to remain in power until 2036.

According to him, this does not contradict international law in any way. "Moreover, similar provisions are practiced in a number of States. I repeat once again, we are not ready for such so — called concerns and will not take them into account," Peskov concluded.
