Kremlin: the ceasefire agreements in Karabakh are not being implemented

22 October 2020

The agreements on ceasefire and humanitarian pause in Nagorno-Karabakh are not implemented by the parties to the conflict, press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov told reporters about this.

"So far, it is impossible to state that previously reached agreements on ceasefire and humanitarian pause are being observed. Unfortunately, they are not observed by the parties to the conflict," Peskov said.

He stated that Russia saw no other way to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict but a diplomatic one. "Russia has done and is doing its best to bring the current situation into the direction of a political and diplomatic settlement. We remain convinced that this problem has no alternative to a peaceful settlement," the Kremlin representative said.

The spokesperson for the head of state added that the Russian side "intends to continue to make every effort for a peaceful settlement of this conflict". "There is no other way out," he said.

Peskov did not comment on the information that the Armenian side doubts the possibility of making progress along the diplomatic line. "It's necessary to ask the Armenian president," Peskov answered.

He added that the involvement of third countries in the settlement of Nagorno-Karabakh is possible only with the consent of both parties to the conflict. "As for the participation of third countries in the existing settlement formats, it entirely depends on the political will of the conflict parties. There are two of them - Azerbaijan and Armenia. And it is possible to participate in the settlement of the conflict, be a certain mediator or participate in the formats only with the consent of both sides," he said, answering the question about the possibility of Turkey's involvement in the settlement of the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Peskov stressed that "it is not yet possible to state that previously reached agreements on ceasefire and humanitarian pause are being observed". "Unfortunately, they are not being observed by the sides," the Kremlin representative stated.
