The Kremlin understands the tightening of migration rules in Kazakhstan, but expects the rights of Russians to be respected, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.

In particular, Kazakhstan has changed the visa-free stay period, which also concerns the citizens of the EEU countries. Now it is not more than 90 calendar days (in total) per period of 180 days. Previously, there was no limit of 180 days, migrants could leave the country and re-enter it to start the countdown all over again.

The representative of the Kremlin pointed out that there are now quite a lot of people in the EEU states who are in transit or have chosen any of these countries as a place of residence and work. "It is clear that countries want to keep a record of these citizens, they want to understand how many citizens they have," he said. At the same time, Peskov assured that Moscow maintains and will maintain contacts with Astana to ensure that all legal rights of Russians are respected.

The press secretary of the Russian president reminded that migrants might stay in Kazakhstan, but they have to obtain the necessary documents.

"It is important to understand that there is a mechanism for obtaining a residence permit everywhere. That is, in this way there is still an opportunity for residents of [other] countries, especially members of the EEU, to move freely and freely choose the country of residence and work," he pointed out.
