Kremlin urged not to underestimate the risk of a second wave of the coronavirus

30 April 2020

The decision to ease restrictions in connection with the coronavirus will be difficult, and will require very deliberate actions,  the Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov told RTVI.

"The risk is very high - the resumption of the second wave, it can be called anyhow. Therefore, very balanced, carefully thought - out and coordinated decisions with specialists will be required," the Kremlin's official representative said, recalling that the President instructed "to prepare estimates of such a plan" by May 5.

Peskov also called phasing "the most difficult decision for all countries."

"It is different for all countries - someone goes more carefully and stretches the exit procedure by time, someone acts more decisively," he added.

Dmitry Peskov also noted that Russia managed to avoid the catastrophic "Italian scenario" of the epidemic, but "not by a miracle, but thanks to the measures taken."

He explained this by saying that  "tough decisions on self-isolation were made in time, quite effective efforts were made to persuade people to stay at home, and the bed fund for receiving patients was effectively and quickly increased."

In Russia, according to the latest data, the coronavirus was detected in 106 thousand people, 1,073 people died.
