10 July 2020

Anna Kuznetsova, the Presidential Commissioner for children's rights, reported that flights to Damascus and the al-Hawl camp were being prepared to take Russian children out of there. She wrote about this on her Instagram page.

"And now I can say with confidence that we are preparing several flights for our children to Syria, to Damascus and the al-Hawl camp," Kuznetsova wrote, summing up the UN virtual counter - terrorism week, where she presented the experience of the Russian Federation in removing Russian children from zones of armed conflict.

The Ombudsman noted that   "taking into account the increasing relevance of this work, I proposed to consolidate the efforts of many states interested in saving their children from life-threatening conditions."

Work on the return of Russian children who were found  in the zone of armed conflict is being actively carried out on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin. In 2017, an interdepartmental commission was established under the office of the children's Ombudsman to facilitate the return of children who were in the war zone. According to the Ombudsman, since December 2018, the Russian side has organized seven special flights (four from Iraq, three from Syria), 156 Russian children have returned home to their relatives.

Earlier, Kuznetsova reported that at the moment more than 60 children were ready to fly, they had the necessary documents. The press service of the Commissioner noted that as soon as the restrictive measures are lifted, the export of children would continue.
