Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry: Global Progress Achieved in Nuclear Non-Proliferation

07 September 2023

The international community has recently taken significant strides in addressing the issue of nuclear non-proliferation. This was highlighted by Asein Isaev, the Deputy Head of the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry, during the regional seminar on "Strengthening the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime" held in Bishkek.

"Throughout modern history, the global community has been committed to disarmament. It is noteworthy that in recent years, significant progress has been achieved by the international community in establishing the groundwork for a safer world, including the signing of several multilateral and bilateral agreements," he stated.

He specified that Kyrgyzstan had joined the treaty on a nuclear-weapon-free zone in Central Asia. "This commitment signifies that countries possessing nuclear weapons pledge not to test or deploy them within the Central Asian states," the deputy minister explained.

Isaev also expressed gratitude to the countries that supported such a decision. "We are grateful to those nuclear-weapon states that have signed these guarantees for our region," he noted, assuring that Central Asia serves as a clear example that "progress in this direction is attainable."

The seminar, titled "Strengthening the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime," held in Bishkek, is organized by the Center for Energy and Security and the Yevgeny Primakov Center for Foreign Policy Cooperation with the support of the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and UN representatives are among the participants in the seminar.
