Kyrgyz parliament sets date for referendum on constitution

The Kyrgyz parliament has approved the appointment of a constitutional referendum on April 11, the decision was made at a meeting of the legislative assembly on Thursday.

 

Ninety-four deputies voted in favor of the bill on calling the referendum, while six voted against it.

 

The draft of the new constitution was published on the website of the Kyrgyz parliament on February 9. The document proposes to introduce the institution of the People's Kurultai (council) as a deliberative, supervisory assembly that gives recommendations on the directions of social development. It is also planned to reformat the institutions of the president and government.

 

The president will be responsible for the formation and work of the cabinet, and the head of the presidential administration will be in charge of the cabinet. In the document, it is planned to reduce the number of parliament members from 120 to 90. In fact, the proposed innovations mean a return from a parliamentary-presidential to a presidential form of government, which 80% of the country's citizens chose in a referendum on January 10.

 

Also, on April 11, Kyrgyzstan will hold elections of deputies of local self-government bodies.
