Early presidential elections will be held in Kyrgyzstan on January 10. Seventeen people will run for the position. The country will hold a referendum on the form of government. Citizens will have to choose, which one they prefer - presidential or parliamentary. On voting day, 2,47 thousand polling stations will be open in the country, including 48 abroad. That includes five in Moscow and the Russian cities of Tyumen, Surgut, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Yakutsk, Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk, Vladivostok, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and Novosibirsk.

The former head of state Sooronbay Jeenbekov resigned on October 15, 2020, after nearly 10 days of protests and riots, which were caused by the dissatisfaction of part of the population with the results of the parliamentary elections. Jeenbekov led Kyrgyzstan for exactly three years. Prime Minister Kubatbek Boronov and parliament speaker Dastanbek Dzhumabekov also resigned.
