Kyrgyzstan accuses Tajikistan of provoking conflict on common border

15 September 2022

The authorities of Kyrgyzstan think that the conflict on the border with Tajikistan, which occurred on September 14, was provoked by Tajikistan, as reads the statement of the Kyrgyz State National Security Committee (SNSC) published on Thursday.

"Another conflict was provoked by Tajikistan. This is evidenced by the previously committed provocative actions starting from September 8, 2022, when under the pretext of ensuring social and political stability on the day of Tajikistan's independence, the Tajik side  transfered its special units to the Vorukh enclave. They also prepared firing positions near the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border",  the report reads.

According to the SCNS, in this regard, the Kyrgyz side "repeatedly initiated negotiations at various levels to prevent any illegal actions." Bishkek asserts that "unidentified individuals <...> in black uniforms without insignia and without military rank took part in the conflict on the part of Tajikistan."

The Kyrgyz SCNS once again called on the Tajik side "to resolve all border problems and issues exclusively through peaceful means and at the negotiating table."

According to the Kyrgyz side, on September 14, Tajik border guards entered an unmarked section of the border near Bulak-Bashy area of Batken district of Batken region of Kyrgyzstan and "took up combat positions." In response to the Kyrgyz soldiers' demand to leave the area, the Tajik border guards opened fire, followed by shootings. A few hours later, there was also a shooting in Kak-Sai and Pasky-Aryk of Batken region. The Kyrgyz side reported two servicemen and three civilians wounded in the incident.
