08 May

In response to a recent border shooting incident, representatives from Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan convened a meeting to address the matter, culminating in an agreement to bolster awareness initiatives in border regions. A joint statement by both parties, disseminated by the Border Service of the Kyrgyz State Committee for National Security, outlined the outcomes of the discussion.

"The meeting took place on May 8, 2024, in the vicinity of Koroo in the Leylek district of the Batken region of the Kyrgyz Republic. It involved border representatives from law enforcement and security agencies of the Batken region of Kyrgyzstan, the Sughd region of Tajikistan, as well as the respective heads of the Leilek district of Batken and the Jabbor-Rasulov district of Sughd," the statement elucidated.

The joint declaration underscores the mutual decision by Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to escalate "explanatory work" at the local level. Additionally, both nations pledged to uphold tasks aimed at fostering amicable and kinship relations among residents of border areas.

"The meeting deliberated on the root causes of incidents involving civilians and border patrols of both parties, the conduct of border area residents engaged in livestock grazing activities, and strategies to address issues to pre-empt potential border skirmishes along the Kyrgyz-Tajik segment of the state border," the statement underscored.

The incident on May 7 precipitated following a conflict between Tajik shepherds and Kyrgyz border guards along the Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan border. Kyrgyz border guards resorted to firing several warning shots in response. According to Tajikistan representatives, the altercation resulted in a Tajik citizen sustaining a leg injury.
