Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan Finalize Border Description

04 December

Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan have completed the description of their shared border, according to a statement from the Kyrgyz government’s press service.

On December 4, 2024, a meeting was held in the city of Batken, located in Kyrgyzstan’s Batken Region, between Kamchybek Tashiev and Saimumin Yatimov, the heads of the governmental delegations tasked with the delimitation and demarcation of the Kyrgyz-Tajik border. During the discussions, the delegation leaders reached an agreement, finalizing the description of the remaining sections of the shared border.

Tashiev and Yatimov instructed the working groups involved in the border delimitation and demarcation efforts to begin preparing the final documents for the process.

The Kyrgyz-Tajik border stretches 987 kilometers. Negotiations regarding its delimitation, which involves defining the border’s route and marking it on maps, have been ongoing since December 2002. The unresolved status of the border has frequently led to conflicts involving local residents and military personnel from both countries, sometimes escalating to the use of firearms. The most recent major incident occurred in early autumn 2022, resulting in over 60 fatalities on the Kyrgyz side.
