Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan hold another round of talks on border delimitation

07 April 2023

Representatives of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan held another meeting in Bishkek, where they discussed the demarcation and delimitation of the section of the joint border. This was reported on Friday by the press service of the Kyrgyz government.

"In accordance with the schedule of meetings for 2023 and the agreement reached through diplomatic channels, regular meetings of topographic working groups and working groups on legal issues of government delegations of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan and the Republic of Tajikistan on the delimitation and demarcation of the Kyrgyz-Tajik state border were held in Bishkek from April 1 to 7, 2023", the statement said.

As assured in the press service, the work of the parties will continue. "In particular, the next meeting of the working groups is planned in the Republic of Tajikistan," the statement said.

According to the MFA of Tajikistan, "the meeting was held in an atmosphere of friendship and mutual understanding."

The length of the state border between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan is about 980 km. Negotiations on its delimitation (definition of the state border with a description of its passage and mapping) have been continuing since December 2002. At present, more than two-thirds of the borderline has been defined and mutually recognized by the states, and the remaining sections are considered disputed. Unresolved issues have repeatedly led to conflicts involving locals and soldiers of the two republics, including some with the use of firearms. The most recent occurred in early fall 2022, with more than 60 Kyrgyz killed in clashes.

In total, there have been more than 10 serious conflicts on the Kyrgyz-Tajik border since 2014. Kyrgyzstan shares borders with China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Only the Tajik side is left to complete the process of border delimitation and demarcation.
