Kyrgyzstan has announced its aspirations to become a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2027-2028 term. This announcement was made by Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev during a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in the Kyrgyz city of Cholpon-Ata.
"Discussing issues of regional and international security, including Afghanistan, the Kyrgyz side informed in detail about Kyrgyzstan's priorities as a candidate for non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council for the period 2027-2028," stated the press service of the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry.
During the meeting, Minister Kulubaev positively assessed the activities of UN agencies in Kyrgyzstan and elaborated on climate change issues, particularly in the context of advancing the mountain agenda.
"UN Secretary-General António Guterres highly appreciated the UN's interaction with Kyrgyzstan and expressed gratitude to the Kyrgyz side for actively promoting the mountain agenda at the global level. According to him, Kyrgyzstan, with its beautiful nature, sets an example for other states in biodiversity conservation," the press service noted.
Guterres arrived in Kyrgyzstan on July 1 from Uzbekistan, and his visit will continue until July 3. On July 2, in Cholpon-Ata, he held talks with the head of the Kyrgyz state, President Sadyr Zhaparov.
