Kyrgyzstan declares September 19 national mourning day

National mourning for the victims of the conflict on the border with Tajikistan was announced in Kyrgyzstan on Monday. The corresponding decree was signed earlier by President Sadyr Zhaparov.


On that day, the country's flags will be lowered nationwide, as well as on diplomatic and consular buildings abroad. The president also advised to cancel entertainment events and shows on Monday.


According to the latest reports, 59 people died on the Kyrgyz side and more than 140 were injured. Authorities have evacuated more than 140,000 citizens. A state of emergency has been declared in Batken region.


The situation on the border between the two countries escalated on September 14. According to the Kyrgyz side, Tajik border guards entered the border section of Batken district of Batken region of Kyrgyzstan and "took combat positions." In response to a demand to leave the territory, the Tajik border guards opened fire, followed by an exchange of fire. A few hours later armed clashes also occurred in the Kak-Sai and Pasky-Aryk areas of Batken region.  On September 17, the Kyrgyz border guard service reported firing at a border section of Osh province.
