Kyrgyzstan is developing new defense doctrine

13 June 2023

Kyrgyzstan is developing a new defense doctrine of the republic given the changing geopolitical situation in the world. This was announced by President Sadyr Zhaparov in Bishkek during a meeting of the Security Council of the republic.

"This doctrine will be developed under my personal supervision", he said. The need to adopt such a document, according to him, is caused by changes taking place in the world, including economic sanctions imposed by some states. In addition, the issue of water use in the Central Asian region remains an important factor.

The head of the Kyrgyz state is convinced that the adoption of the new doctrine will significantly protect the republic from external threats.

Zhaparov also recalled that a significant amount of modern military equipment, including Bayraktar drones and Pechora antiaircraft missile system, has recently been purchased to strengthen the country's security. Two new helicopters have also been purchased for the republic's emergency ministry, and five defense ministry helicopters have been sent in for overhaul. Kyrgyzstan plans to purchase Mi-17 helicopters in the near future.

This meeting of the Security Council of Kyrgyzstan is dedicated to its army's readiness to respond to modern challenges and threats, as well as to the prospects for the armed forces' development. The Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Kyrgyzstan, Erlis Terdikbaev, emphasized that the new military doctrine will be primarily aimed at preventing the possibility of military conflicts.
About the activities of terrorist groups

The activity of some international terrorist and extremist groups remains one of the main threats to security for the Central Asian countries, Zhaparov said.

"The activities of international terrorist and extremist organisations remain a source of threat to all states in the Central Asian region," he said. The changes taking place in the world can also negatively affect the security of some countries, including Kyrgyzstan, he said.

"The aggravation of relations between leading states and military-political blocs has undermined mutual trust between countries and caused a crisis that has a negative impact on the global economy. Trade restrictions and other factors of the sanctions policy can lead to instability at the global level," the Kyrgyz leader believes.

In this regard, he considers it important to strengthen the defense capabilities of the republic, including improving the technical equipment of its armed forces and taking other measures to strengthen state security. Zhaparov reminded that Kyrgyzstan and Russia have created a joint air defense system for this purpose.
