Kyrgyzstan plans to export electricity to Russia and other EEU countries

25 May 2023

In the future, Kyrgyzstan expects to export electricity to Russia and other countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU). Energy Minister Taalaibek Ibraev told TASS on Wednesday on the sidelines of the second Eurasian Economic Forum.

"Cooperation [with the Russian Federation in the energy sector] is eternal and long, as our time will come when we will start exporting electricity to Russia. That's in the near future," he said.

Ibraev noted that membership in the EEU will provide the republic with an opportunity to export its electricity to other countries of the union.

In his speech at the forum, the minister noted that Kyrgyzstan is able to produce about 142-145 billion kWh of electricity annually, but at the moment uses only "10-12% of its resources". This is one of the reasons why the republic experiences occasional power shortages of "up to 3 billion kWh" per year. The lack of electricity has to be compensated for by importing it from some neighboring republics and the Russian Federation.
