Kyrgyzstan Says It Has Foiled a Terrorist Attack in Europe

31 May

Employees of the State Committee for National Security (GNKB) of Kyrgyzstan, in cooperation with foreign colleagues, have thwarted a terrorist act planned in a European country, according to the GKNB.

"GKNB, in the course of counter-terrorist measures in cooperation with foreign partners, suppressed an attempt to organize a terrorist act by members of an international terrorist organization (ITO) on the territory of one of the European countries," the statement read.

One of the potential perpetrators was identified as a Kyrgyz citizen "hiding abroad." His name has not been disclosed due to the ongoing investigation. In Kyrgyzstan, a case was opened against him under the article of the Criminal Code concerning the participation of a Kyrgyz citizen in armed conflicts or military actions on foreign soil, or undergoing training to commit a terrorist act. The suspect was detained abroad, brought back to Kyrgyzstan, and placed in the investigative isolator of the GKNB.

As part of the investigation, searches were conducted at 17 addresses in the city of Tokmok in the Chui region of Kyrgyzstan. During these searches, authorities found and seized extremist literature associated with the Islamic State (banned in Russia), electronic media, narcotic substances, and ammunition.

"At present, investigative and operational activities are continuing," the statement emphasized. The specific European country where the terrorist act was planned has not been disclosed by the GNKB.
