The crisis around Ukraine threatens the Arab world with serious economic consequences and its food security, Arab League (LAS) Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit said on Wednesday, speaking at the 157th session of the Council of the League at the level of foreign ministers of the regional community in Cairo.

"Some of what the Ukrainian crisis puts before us is urgent and unavoidable, requiring us to act deliberately for the foreseeable future," the secretary-general pointed out. - "Its economic consequences are no secret, and our region will unfortunately suffer from it. Already today we must think and work to find ways and strategies that will minimize this suffering. In particular, I am referring to the problem of Arab food security, which will be negatively affected by the disruption of grain and other food imports from the two countries involved in the conflict."

"The world order is going through a complex and delicate phase in which we are witnessing sudden transformations and unfamiliar developments,"  Aboul Gheit  stressed. - "And this phase, with all its attendant risks, requires the highest degree of wisdom, calm and prudent thinking on everyone's part".

"It also requires an understanding of the high price conflicts and wars, especially between major powers, have to pay, not only to the peoples and countries involved, but to the entire world," he said. - "And it would be difficult for any nation in this complex world of interdependence to distance itself from the consequences of a major event such as today's war in Ukraine."
