Carrying out threats to attack Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities would constitute a significant provocation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated during a press conference.
"Of course, if plans or threats to strike Iran's peaceful nuclear facilities are carried out, it would be a very serious provocation," Lavrov said, responding to a question about the possibility of an Israeli strike on Iran.
Lavrov also addressed reports that Iran’s parliament is seriously considering withdrawing from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in anticipation of a potential retaliatory missile strike from Israel. He emphasized that Russia relies on the assessments of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which has not detected any signs of Iran shifting its nuclear program toward military purposes.
"We prefer to base our judgments on facts, as I’ve already mentioned. In nearly every country, there are political figures and parliamentarians who express positions that do not reflect the practical strategy or policy of their governments. We’ve seen many examples of this,” Lavrov added.
“As for the actual situation, the IAEA, which closely monitors Iran’s nuclear program, has not observed any indications that Iran is converting its nuclear efforts into a military program. The IAEA regularly provides such reports to the Board of Governors, and we rely on these professional assessments,” the Russian foreign minister concluded.
