Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken discussed the prospects of restoring the Joint comprehensive plan of action on the Iranian nuclear program (JCPOA) by phone on Wednesday, the Russian foreign ministry reported.
"The two sides exchanged views on prospects for restoring full implementation of the Joint comprehensive plan of action to resolve the Iranian nuclear program and also discussed a number of topical issues on the bilateral agenda," the statement said.
The conversation took place at the initiative of the US side.
Lavrov will also hold talks in Moscow on Wednesday with Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian. The ministers are expected to discuss prospects for restoring the JCPOA.
Negotiations between Iran and the international five (Russia, Britain, Germany, China and France) on the restoration of the Iranian nuclear agreement in its original form have been taking place in Vienna since April. The parties are discussing the removal of US sanctions against the Islamic Republic, the fulfillment of its nuclear commitments, and the return of the US to the JCPOA.
Representatives of the states participating in the agreement are also holding separate consultations with US emissaries without Iran's participation. Initially, the delegations expected to finish their work in late May and then in early June. On September 21, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said that negotiations on the full resumption of the nuclear deal would begin again in Vienna within weeks.
