Lavrov and Head of Yemen's Governing Council Discuss Prospects for Settlement in the Republic

22 September 2023

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Rashad Mohammed al-Alimi, Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council of Yemen, during the 78th session of the UN General Assembly. They discussed the potential for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Yemen.

The meeting took place amid ongoing developments in Yemen and the mediation efforts led by Saudi Arabia and Oman to reestablish a ceasefire and achieve a comprehensive political settlement. Al-Alimi expressed high regard for the strong relations between Yemen and the Russian Federation. He also appreciated Russia's clear stance in supporting Yemen's internationally recognized government and its national institutions, both in the UN Security Council and on other international platforms.

In recent events, Riyadh hosted talks between a delegation from the Houthi rebel movement (Ansar Allah) and Saudi representatives. According to Reuters sources, these discussions made "some progress" in addressing key issues, including the withdrawal of foreign forces from Yemen and the provision of social guarantees to the population in Houthi-controlled areas.

The conflict in Yemen began in August 2014, with ongoing confrontations between government forces and supporters of the rebel Ansar Allah movement. The conflict escalated significantly when a coalition led by Saudi Arabia invaded the country in March 2015. In April 2022, the parties reached a truce, which, however, expired in October.
