Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Iran’s Acting Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani have condemned the political assassination of Hamas politburo chief Ismail Haniyeh and warned of potential further escalation in the region.
In their joint statement, the officials denounced the killing of Haniyeh in Tehran while he was attending the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian. They highlighted the unacceptability of political assassinations and the severe consequences of such actions, which could lead to a significant escalation in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and destabilize the region.
“The organizers of these provocations clearly aim to disrupt the stalled negotiation process and are likely betting on involving the United States in military actions, thereby overshadowing UN resolutions concerning the establishment of a Palestinian state,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement following the telephone conversation between Lavrov and Bagheri Kani.
