Lavrov and Libyan Prime Minister agree on the resumption of the work of the intergovernmental commission

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Libyan Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh agreed to resume the work of the Russian-Libyan intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation in the near future, the statement released on Friday by the Russian Foreign Ministry reads.

 

"It was confirmed that in view of historical ties with Libya and its people, Russia is ready to provide multifaceted assistance in quickly overcoming the long-standing acute crisis in that country through active participation in the post-conflict reconstruction of its social and economic infrastructure," the diplomatic office said. - "In this context, the sides confirmed mutual interest in establishing and strengthening a mutually beneficial business partnership in all areas on the basis of a wide range of opportunities. At the same time, it was agreed to resume in the nearest future the work of the Russian-Libyan intergovernmental commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation".


The parties noted the significant progress in the Libyan settlement over the past few months. In this context, the formation of unified transitional authorities in the country was highly appreciated. "The priorities of the new Libyan leadership include the final unification of state institutions, financial, economic and military structures, as well as the preparation and holding of national elections scheduled for December 24, 2021," Smolensk Square pointed out.


Moscow and Tripoli reaffirmed the importance of achieving a Libyan-wide consensus on the key points of the national agenda, taking into account the interests of all political forces and social groups of the country to ensure its unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity, and stressed the need to consolidate international support for the transitional Libyan authorities in furthering the political process under the coordinating role of the UN.


From the Libyan side, the meeting was also attended by Mohammed al-Haddad, Chief of the General Staff of the Libya Army, Najla Mangoush, Libya's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Mohammed Aoun, Minister of Oil and Gas.
