Russian and Egyptian Foreign Ministers Sergey Lavrov and Sameh Shoukry stressed the need to end the fighting in Libya and resume meaningful talks between the warring sides, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

It is noted that the telephone conversation between the Foreign Ministers of Russia and Egypt took place on the initiative of the Egyptian side.

"During the conversation, the ministers discussed in detail the prospects for the development of the situation in the Middle East and North Africa. They reaffirmed their common positions on the lack of alternatives to a political settlement in Libya and emphasized the need for the cessation of hostilities and the resumption of meaningful talks between the confronting Libyan sides," the message reads.

In this context, the ministers supported a program for overcoming the crisis in Libya, which was proposed by President of the Libyan House of Representatives Aguila Saleh and could become the foundation of intra-Libyan dialogue in promoting the development of the "Berlin process".

"Discussing settlement issues in the Middle East, the ministers supported the invigoration of the concerted efforts of the international community, including the participants of the Quartet of international mediators and Arab League members, with a view to resuming direct Palestinian-Israeli talks under the UN aegis as soon as possible," the Ministry added.

The parties noted that annexing sections of Palestinian land on the West Bank of the Jordan River will threaten the prospects for the two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli problem and could provoke a new and dangerous round of violence in the region.

After the overthrow and death of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya effectively ceased to function as a single state. Now the country is ruled by dual power. The East is ruled by the people's elected Parliament, and the West, in the capital Tripoli, - the Government of National Accord, formed with the support of the UN and the European Union, led by Fayez Sarraj. The authorities in the Eastern part of the country operate independently of Tripoli and cooperate with the Libyan national army led by Marshal Khalifa Haftar, who has not stopped trying to capture Tripoli since April 2019.
