Lavrov and UN Secretary-General discuss the situation in Libya and the fight against COVID-19

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed with UN Secretary-General António Guterres the situation in Libya, Syria and issues related to response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

 

"During the conversation, the main attention was paid to the problems of the Syrian and Libyan settlement with an emphasis on certain aspects of UN activities in these areas, as well as the work of the World Organization to respond to the consequences of the pandemic of new coronavirus infection," the message on the results of a telephone conversation reads.

 

The Russian side noted "priority of the fastest decision of a question on the management of the United Nations mission in Libya in the conditions of the continuing deterioration of a situation in this country".


"Lavrov emphasized Russian support for the work of the UN and its specialized agencies aimed at coordinating the efforts of member countries in overcoming the COVID-19 pandemic and its socio-economic impact. The parties discussed ways to improve the effectiveness of global cooperation in this area, expanding multilateral cooperation on the platform of the global Organization," the message says.

 

In addition, Sergey Lavrov and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres during a telephone conversation noted the threat of activation of terrorists in Syria against the background of the coronavirus pandemic.

 

"There was a detailed exchange of views on the situation "on the ground" in Syria, including the efforts of Russia and Turkey to stabilize the situation and ensure a ceasefire in Idlib de-escalation zone in the framework of the implementation of the Additional Protocol dated 5 March," the message of the Russian MFA notes.


"The parties also touched upon threat of activation of terrorists in Syria against the background of the coronavirus pandemic, as well as confirmed the need to ensure lasting security and stability in the country through the restoration of its sovereignty and territorial integrity," the Russian MFA concludes.
