Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov had a telephone conversation with Foreign Minister of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Javad Zarif. The parties discussed the developments in Afghanistan and the situation around the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on Iran’s nuclear program.
"During the telephone conversation, the Foreign Ministers of Iran and Russia exchanged views on the development of the political situation in Afghanistan, discussing efforts aimed at reconciliation and political consensus in this country," the message of the Iranian Foreign Ministry reads.
In addition, during the conversation, the Ministers rejected the new US plan for the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, which was previously published by the New York Times.
The publication reported that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was working on a plan according to which the US would be able to take advantage of the provision from the nuclear deal with Iran, from which the US leader formally withdrew in 2018, to extend the arms embargo against Tehran or resume tougher sanctions.
