Russia hopes to overcome the split in the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC), this will help ensure security in the region, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday following talks with Qatar Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani.
"Russia hopes that the Gulf Arab summit planned for January 5 will lead to overcoming the split in the Gulf Cooperation Council and allow it to resume its normal activities," the minister said.
According to him, Moscow is interested in resolving the contradictions between the Arab countries, which are its partners and friends. "Restoring the unity of this council, restoring its capacity is also important for the implementation of ideas that concern security in the Persian Gulf zone as a whole, that is, with the participation of the Islamic Republic of Iran," the Russian Foreign Minister stressed.
Lavrov recalled that for many years Russia had been promoting the concept of security in this region. "Our proposals arouse, I will say bluntly, a lively interest," he added.
