Lavrov: BRICS Enlargement to Enhance the Association's Strength and Global Influence

15 August 2023

The enlargement of BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) is poised to elevate the organization's influence on the global political stage, as per the perspective articulated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at the Moscow Conference on International Security.

"A crucial point on the upcoming summit's agenda in Johannesburg this month will revolve around the expansion of BRICS. This step is bound to substantially fortify the association and amplify its significance in international affairs," Lavrov stated.

The head of Russian diplomacy underscored the rapid ascendancy of BRICS in terms of stature and appeal. He highlighted that within this framework, "countries with divergent political systems and distinct value foundations serve as a model for multipolar diplomacy. This diplomacy is oriented towards achieving harmonious trade, economic, investment, and humanitarian collaboration on an equitable basis, while safeguarding against external dictates." Lavrov also accentuated the growing synchrony in foreign policy initiatives within the group.
