Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov described the situation in Syria as a “complex game” involving numerous actors, highlighting the challenges of achieving stability in the region. Speaking to American journalist Tucker Carlson, Lavrov addressed the surge in activity by Islamist terrorist groups in northern Syria.
Lavrov emphasized the multifaceted nature of the Syrian conflict, stating, “This is a complex game with many players involved. I hope that the meetings scheduled for this week will help stabilize the situation.”
He acknowledged the growing challenges posed by terrorist groups, noting Russia's concerns about their sources of support. Lavrov confirmed that Russia possesses information regarding who might be backing these groups and expressed a desire to engage with partners to block channels of funding and arms supplies.
Lavrov pointed to publicly available information suggesting that certain Western nations, including the United States and the United Kingdom, may be indirectly supporting these groups. He added, “Some speculate that Israel could have an interest in exacerbating the situation in Syria to divert attention away from the Gaza Strip.”
