Lavrov commented on the West's silencing of the Soviet Union's role in the Victory

Russia does not suspect the United States of deliberately obscuring history, and the role of the USSR in the victory over fascism is being suppressed as a result of propaganda, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said following an online meeting of the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers.

"Of course, this is a sad story, especially in connection with the fact that just a couple of weeks ago, at the end of April, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the meeting on the Elbe, the presidents (Vladimir) Putin and (Donald) Trump (adopted) a joint statement, which gave a principled assessment of the victory and the contribution that this victory made to the modern world order, and which stressed the need to continue such close, ideally allied relations to combat the current threats, which today have a cross - border nature, do not know any national framework," RIA Novosti quotes, in particular, the head of Russian diplomacy.

Lavrov also recalled that at the Holocaust memorial forum in January, the US Vice President Mike Pence, speaking about the liberation of Auschwitz, did not even mention Soviet soldiers.

"To be honest, I am not surprised when this kind of thing is heard, and not because we suspect any of the specific American politicians of deliberately obscuring history - this is the result of processing the public consciousness, including politicians, as it turns out. They don't have immunity from what is spread by propaganda that tries to put on the same level the Nazis and those who freed Europe from the brown plague, who try to assign the Soviet Union equal responsibility with Hitler's Germany for the outbreak of the Second World war," Lavrov said.

Earlier, the White House accounts on Instagram and Twitter published a post in which only the United States and Great Britain were named winners of Nazism, and the Soviet Union was not mentioned at all.

The Russian Foreign Ministry previously said that Moscow intended to hold a "serious conversation with Washington officials" about the distortion of the results of the defeat of Nazism and the role of the USSR in WWII.
