Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in interviews with Sputnik, Govorit Moskva, and Komsomolskaya Pravda radio stations said that discussions by Western nations regarding Iran's alleged pursuit of nuclear weapons serve as an attempt to shift global attention away from the ongoing events in the Gaza Strip towards a new target.
"It appears to me that the desire and objective are to shift the global attention from the dire situation in the Gaza Strip, where a humanitarian crisis is unfolding and numerous special rapporteurs from the UN Human Rights Council have already raised concerns about genocide, to redirect attention towards Iran as a perceived threat," he stated.
Lavrov pointed out that the collective West aims to attribute to Iran, among other accusations, a potential nuclear weapons attack, despite Iran lacking such capabilities. "This fact is confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as Iran is the most thoroughly monitored nation among the signatories of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons," Lavrov clarified.
Furthermore, Lavrov highlighted that Iran has enacted legislation, including a fatwa, declaring nuclear weapons as prohibited within the country. "Iran has no motivation to engage in such activities, especially after responding to an unacceptable strike on the Iranian consular office, resulting in casualties," the Russian foreign minister concluded.
