Lavrov: countries that ignored the conference in Damascus acted against the interests of Syrians

The countries that refused to send delegations to the International Conference on Refugees Return held in Damascus, acted against the interests of the Syrian people, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a press conference.

He noted that the countries participating in the conference confirmed their interest in settling the Syrian crisis solely in the interests of the Syrians and without any attempts to play geopolitical games and combinations.

"Those countries, which consciously took a course not just to ignore this conference but which did everything to make their allies not to send delegations to this important event have grave sin on their consciences. They went against the main in life, the main in any conflict - against the interests of ordinary people, in this case, ordinary Syrians," Lavrov said.

He expressed confidence that the international community was in any case aware of its responsibility to assist not only the Syrian but also other peoples who find themselves in a situation of conflict. "It should be in full compliance with the norms of international humanitarian law and should not be in any way subjected to politicization and ideologization",  the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed.

Last week the International Conference on Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons was held in Damascus, which gathered delegations from 26 states, including Russia, China, Iran, Lebanon, Oman and Pakistan. The forum was also attended by representatives of the UN and 12 non-governmental organizations.
