Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during a telephone conversation with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Cooperation, African Integration and Nigerians Abroad of Niger Kalla Ankourao discussed security issues in the states of the Sahara-Sahel region. This is stated in a statement issued on Thursday by the Russian foreign Ministry.
"The parties discussed topical issues of further development of traditionally friendly Russian-Niger relations, including strengthening cooperation on key issues on the international and African agenda," the Foreign Ministry said. - The issues of ensuring peace and security in the states of the Sahara-Sahel region and normalizing the situation in Mali were touched upon."
The Foreign Ministry added that the conversation also "confirmed the high level of political understanding between Russia and Niger, readiness to expand cooperation within the UN, including in the context of Niamey's membership in the Security Council in 2020-2021, as well as the chairmanship of this body in September this year."
