28 February 2020

Foreign Ministers of Russia and Luxembourg Sergey Lavrov and Jean Asselborn discussed the situation in Syria.

"Of course, we started talking about Syria, we could not ignore this issue. Now it is the turning point, which is extremely important for Syria. It is not Europe but the UN that should deal with this problem", the Luxembourg diplomat said at a press conference following the talks.

The situation in Idlib worsened after the terrorists' a large-scale offensive on the positions of the Syrian government troops on February 27. The SAR army returned fire, and as a result, the Turkish military was injured, who, as stated in the Russian Defense Ministry, "should not have been there".

A total of 33 Turkish soldiers were killed. The Russian Defense Ministry stressed that immediately after receiving information about the victims of the Turkish military, measures for a complete ceasefire by Syrian troops  were taken, and the safe evacuation of killed and wounded Turkish soldiers to the territory of Turkey was provided.
