Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke by telephone with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday about the situation in Afghanistan in light of the de facto regime change taking place in that country, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
"The sides discussed the situation in Afghanistan after the head of state fled the country, the collapse of the existing authorities and the de facto ongoing regime change," the Russian diplomatic office said. The conversation took place at the US initiative.
Lavrov and Blinken agreed to continue consultations with other interested parties in order to promote dialogue in Afghanistan after the change of power in the country. "The foreign ministers agreed to continue consultations with the participation of representatives of China, Pakistan, other interested countries and the UN in order to facilitate the creation of preconditions for the establishment of an inclusive inter-Afghan dialogue in the new conditions," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
"Sergey Lavrov informed his colleague about Russian assessments of the situation and the Russian embassy's contacts with representatives of all major political forces in Afghanistan in the interest of promoting stability and the rule of law," the diplomatic office also said. In turn, Blinken told Lavrov "about the actions taken by the US administration in the context of the evacuation of the US embassy staff in Kabul and the solution of urgent humanitarian problems arising from the current situation".
