Lavrov discussed with Lebanese politician aid to Lebanon in fight against pandemic

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed the situation in the republic and its assistance in combating the pandemic at a meeting Thursday with Jebran Basil, chairman of the Free Patriotic Movement of Lebanon.


"Some aspects of further strengthening Russian-Lebanese multifaceted cooperation were touched upon, in particular providing Lebanon with additional assistance in fighting the spread of the coronavirus infection," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.


There was a confidential exchange of views on the development of the situation in Lebanon. "The sides expressed concern about consequences of the continuing deep political and socio-economic crisis, which must be solved through establishment of a capable government headed by appointed Prime Minister Saad Hariri and supported by the majority of parliament members and main political and confessional forces of the country,"  the diplomatic mission informed.


Smolensk Square pointed out that the Russian side reiterated its position in support of Lebanon's sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity. "The importance of resolving pressing issues on the national agenda on the basis of an inter-Lebanese consensus without foreign interference was stressed," the ministry added.


The sides also discussed the Middle East settlement. "While discussing topical Middle East issues, Sergey Lavrov stressed Russia's unwavering commitment to achieving comprehensive peace in the region in accordance with the existing international legal framework," the Russian Foreign Ministry informed. Special attention was also paid to facilitating the return of Syrian refugees to their homeland, more than a million of whom are in Lebanon.


Smolenskaya Square reported that Basil also met on Thursday with the Russian President's Special Representative for the Middle East and African countries, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov.
