Lavrov discusses return of refugees to Nagorno-Karabakh with UN High Commissioner for Refugees

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday held a meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi, the sides discussed the return of refugees to Nagorno-Karabakh.


"The sides exchanged views on the situation of refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs) and stateless persons in the world, including in the light of the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as on various aspects of cooperation between the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and our country", the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. - "The issues of the return of refugees and temporarily displaced persons to Nagorno-Karabakh and adjacent areas in accordance with the statement of the leaders of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia of November 9, 2020, on the ceasefire and all military actions in the conflict zone".


The Minister drew the attention of the UN representative to the need to intensify the efforts of the international community for the return of Syrian refugees, who could make a significant contribution to the post-conflict reconstruction of the country. The head of the Russian diplomatic mission also expressed concern about the phenomenon of statelessness in the Baltic states.


"The activities of UNHCR to implement projects aimed at helping refugees and IDPs who had to leave their homes as a result of the internal armed conflict in southeastern Ukraine were discussed," the diplomatic office summarized. - "Grandi positively assessed Russia's active role in finding solutions to the world's problems of forced migration, as well as the measures taken in our country to resolve the legal situation of refugees and asylum seekers".
