Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Tuesday during a telephone conversation with his German counterpart Heiko Maas drew the attention of his interlocutor to attempts from outside to destabilize the situation in Belarus.

"As a follow-up to the telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel that took place on the same day, the Ministers discussed the latest events in Belarus in the context of the presidential elections held there. The hope was expressed for an early normalization of the situation. The Russian side stressed the inadmissibility of any external interference in internal political processes, and drew the attention of Germany, as the European Union presidency, to attempts made from outside to destabilize the situation in this fraternal country for Russia," the statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry reads.

According to the Foreign Ministry, the Ministers also paid special attention to the initiative of the Russian President to hold a meeting of the leaders of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, Germany and Iran to find ways to ensure reliable security in the Persian Gulf zone, taking into account the concerns of all interested parties.

In addition, Lavrov and Maas reaffirmed their commitment to UN Security Council resolution 2231, which created an international legal framework for the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action for the settlement of the Iranian nuclear program. "As indicated, the conclusion of this agreement in 2015 was a major political and diplomatic achievement aimed at strengthening the nuclear non-proliferation regime and regional security in the Middle East region," the Ministry stressed.
