Lavrov: Europe suffers most from sanctions against Russia

18 July 2022

The foreign policy of the collective West consistently leads to the search for new theaters of war. This is stated in an article by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov published on Monday for the Izvestia newspaper.

The Russian foreign minister noted that Europe, "built" by Washington on an anti-Russian front, suffers more than anyone else from mindless sanctions. According to him, Brussels empties its reserves by supplying Kiev without demanding reports about who controls and where the armaments end up afterwards. The minister noted that in this way the European market is freed to buy products of the US military-industrial complex and expensive LNG from the US instead of more affordable gas from Russia.

Such trends, noted Lavrov, "together with the practical merger of the EU and NATO make the current discussions about strategic autonomy of the European Union no more than a show." According to the head of Russian diplomacy, everyone has understood that "the foreign policy of the collective West is a "one-man theater".  At the same time it "consistently leads to the search for new theaters of military operations," noted the minister.

Lavrov also drew attention to a statement made by Josep Borrell, head of the EU foreign policy service, that the conflict must be ended by "a victory for Ukraine on the battlefield." According to the minister, this "suggests that even such a tool as diplomacy loses its meaning in the EU's 'stage performance".
