The ideals of peace outlined in the UN Charter will remain mere words as long as the West continues to seek global dominance, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated in an interview with Newsweek.
“The UN must remain a platform where the interests of all countries are reconciled. We advocate for all states, including the United States, to fulfill their obligations on an equal footing with others, rather than covering up legal nihilism with mantras of their own exceptionalism,” Lavrov said. “Our Chinese partners can speak for themselves, but I believe and know that they share this view—especially the understanding that security and development are inseparable. As long as the West pursues dominance, the ideals of peace enshrined in the UN Charter will remain on paper.”
Lavrov pointed out that Russia is supported by the overwhelming majority of the world, which sees “how international law is being flagrantly violated in Gaza and Lebanon, just as it was earlier in Kosovo, Iraq, Libya, and many other places.”
“We are talking about the strengthening of new centers of power and decision-making in the Global South and East. These centers do not aspire to hegemony, but they recognize the importance of sovereign equality and civilizational diversity. They advocate for mutually beneficial cooperation and for taking each other's interests into account,” the Russian Foreign Minister emphasized.
According to him, multipolarity is reflected in the growing influence of regional organizations such as the EAEU, SCO, ASEAN, the African Union, CELAC, and others. “BRICS has become a model of multilateral diplomacy,” Lavrov added.
