Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov received in Moscow Hussein al-Sheikh, a member of the Palestinian Fatah Movement’s Central Committee.
During the meeting the officials focused on further developing traditionally friendly relations between Russia and Palestine, with an emphasis on deepening the political dialogue on urgent problems of the Middle East.
The Russian side confirmed its commitment to the two-state solution in settling the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on a universally recognised foundation of international law, as well as that ther is no alternative to direct talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis under the aegis of the international Quartet.
At the same time, the importance of restoring Palestinian national unity based on the PLO’s political platform as soon as possible was emphasized.
