Libya's parliamentary and presidential elections should be held at the end of December, in accordance with existing agreements, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference on Wednesday.
"We want the agreements that were reached last fall in Geneva under the auspices of the UN to be implemented. This involves the formation of a legislative framework for constitutional reform, for the holding of elections. We need to do this in time to organize the voting in late December, as the Libyans themselves agreed to," he said.
All forces within Libyan society must be included in the settlement process, including representatives of the Libyan National Army and "the former regime, which still enjoys significant influence among the Libyan people," the minister added.
At the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum in Switzerland in February this year, the Libyan head of government and representatives of the three-member Presidential Council were approved. The main task of those transitional authorities is to prepare and conduct, in accordance with the previously approved road map, the parliamentary and presidential elections in the country on December 24, 2021.
